Too Soon

April 5, 2019

Creative writing challenge prompt from Imaginary Garden with Real Toads. A young girl sings a song that, while beautifully done, is beyond her emotionally, I think. I see a girl trying to grow up too soon by emulating experience. I’ve been that girl…we’ve all been that girl…we didn’t listen either.

Young girl, run and play
it is too soon to worry
about things of the heart
plenty of time to be serious
now should be the time of laughter
of joy, of simple pleasures given and received
find beauty in doing, in being
not in appearances that change
by hormones, by time, by accident
it is too soon for the experience you think you want
it is too soon for eyes that have seen and felt too much
run and play for time slips by and you will be there soon enough

We are all in a hurry to grow up, and then we all want to stop time. Great poem.

I’m right there with you. Heavy song for her age…
