Recurring Nightmare theme

I have a recurring action that happens in many of my nightmares.  I’m trying to call 911, whether on a cell phone or on a landline, for me or someone else and I can’t get through.  Either I keep misdialing, or the phone fails or something similar.

In last night’s dream, I was in a car accident.  I was getting a ride home from my dream downtown city job with a friend I know in real life.  Something happened and the car flipped in a deserted area.  Right before it happened the driver said “oh no!”  At some point, I found my cell phone in my hand.  I tried to call 911 but it called one of my husband’s aunts (who dislikes me).  She hung up.  I dialed 911 again and again she answered, screamed about prank calls and hung up.  So I called my husband.  I tried to tell him where I was and what would happen when I called 911…I must have lost consciousness.  The next thing I remember is waking up in what I think was a hospital surrounded by people (family members?) waiting to see if I would wake up or not.  First person I saw was my husband…I don’t remember much more of the dream beyond that.

Like I said this is a recurring theme in my nightmares…trying to call for help and for one reason or another failing.  The only thing I can think of is that this speaks of my very real fear of reaching out to others and being rejected.  That is not exactly what happens in the dreams but it is similar.  The dreams are where I’m asking for emergency help and unable to get it.  Not sure what triggers these dreams but they are rather depressing.  At least in this dream, my hubby was there to act as hero once again.

Hmmm it occurs to me that the ritual I did last night was a flop.  Maybe that is what triggered it?

What about you?  Do you have any recurring themes like this in your dreams?

For me the recurring theme is not knowing where I’m supposed to be. Normally manifesting in trying to find classes at the beginning of school with having my schedule, or standing at the bus stop and realizing I don’t know which bus number I’m waiting on, or forgetting my address and having no way of finding my way home.

Ugh! That reminds me of another theme I used to dream a lot…having the registrar office of my college call saying that my degree was not valid and that I need to take another class. The dream with this theme that sticks out the most is showing up for class late because I had trouble finding it and finding it filled with 3rd graders. I sit down in a much to small seat and open the workbook which the students are working on and not understanding a word of it.

Or the dream where I’m repeatedly skipping a class because I’ve forgotten about it until the final and realize that I’m going to flunk because I don’t understand it.

I keep hoping the longer I’m out of school the less I’ll have these. Nine years later, no such luck. Funny how the mind gets “stuck”. 😛

I graduated in ’94 and still occasionally have them, though the dreams seem to be coming farther apart.

Wow, interesting — and very frustrating. I’m afraid I don’t have any suggestions for what could be triggering these dreams, or what they could mean. Do they always have a decent (heh) resolution, like this one did? (I mean, at least you ended up in the hospital, alive, with your husband there.)

One of my recurring themes is traveling on foot through paths that don’t make any sense, so I never get where I’m trying to go. Often it involved staircases, mountain paths, stairs/ladders/passageways on rafters and rollercoaster-type structures. Also, at some point I usually encounter a (dirty) body of water that I try to avoid but end up falling into. Ugh.

No they usually do not have a satisfactory resolution. Sometimes someone else makes the call. Other times I just feel like I failed.

Your dreams sound like the hamster wheel of doom. Running and running and running but getting nowhere. My brain does that alot…usually when I’m trying to go to sleep.
