PBP: Saved by the Thistle

September 29, 2012

The warriors collapse
in the first meadow
thistle-free found
tartans crumpled
where they lay
all asleep in the dark
except the one
devotee of Scathach
who crawls looking
looking for an offering
a gift for the Lady
wearily he feels as if
he has traversed
the area for miles
with no fortunate find
until a sharp pain
in the palm of his hand
a spine sunk so deep
blood drops down
aye a perfect find
for his deadly lady
the Scottish thistle
hidden in a grassy patch
alone in the meadow
with praise the warrior
lays out his bloody offering
sinking gratefully into sleep
in the dark of night
just before dawn
invaders creep
shoeless for a quiet
but bloody deed
a watcher reported
seeing a band of men
dropping into sleep
as the sun disappeared
so advantage is theirs
or so they thought
until each man stepped
upon spines so sharp
as to cause all to shout
with one painful cry
waking the sleeping warriors
unfortunate invaders
sent to their gods
in a meadow of thistles
