PBP: This is Styx

August 16, 2012

Styx, nymph of the river
that binds seven times
the underworld from mortals
a branch of Oceanus
flowing from the tenth
First immortal ally of Zeus
in the war with the Titans
she brought him her children
Zeal, Victory, Strength and Power
sheltered under his roof evermore
The reward of watery Styx
divinity of immortal oaths
by her waters the gods swore
those forsworn, no ambrosia
left breathless and flat
ill for a year in her dread bed
afterwards healed but more ills
nine years more removed
from all immortals and festivals
Abhored nymph, divine threat
this is Styx.

With this post, I am officially caught up.  Phew!  My muse has been working me over time today!

I never knew the story behind why the Gods swore and unbreakable oath when they did swear by Styx. I thought it was a river of that name and did not know what truly lay behind it.
You have done a great job with this post as you’ve done with the others. I would guess the Muses are smiling at you even now.

Actually I didn’t either. Thank you. They (and Hermes) have certainly kept me hopping.
