Review: The Lightning Thief, the movie

Finally found the DVD for cheap.  I would have liked this movie better if I hadn’t read the books.  This is one of those cases where the movie is a completely different entity than the book.  The book was better but I enjoyed the movie too.  Same characters, similar storyline but vastly different.

My main quibble with this movie is the way the Gods are portrayed.  Zeus is a powerful asshat, Hades the evil underworld king, Persephone the sex starved queen who hates the underworld, etc.  Really?  Isn’t that so over done?  Why can’t they portray conflict without anyone having to be evil.  That is SO simplistic!  Poseidon didn’t look anything like I imagined. At least Zeus wasn’t gray haired, I guess.

I did like Pierce Brosnan as Chiron.  I expected to hate that.

I loved Grover.  His character was better in the movie than in the book.  They were a bit inconsistent with the goat legs and the crutches though…one frame they’d be there and not the next.

Rosario Dawson as Persephone will forever change the way I view her though and in a good way if you remove the campiness.  She made me wonder if she would choose to be dark skinned, dark hair, dark clothing for the underworld and all lightness when up above with mom?
